Daniel DeFoe, in the early 1700's, was almost a journalist in that he interviewed many people before he wrote a lot of his novels - such as a guy who actually was marooned on an island for a great while. DeFoe interviewed him, and wrote a story similar to his actual life - yet he changed his name for the story. Then DeFoe interviewed many sea-roving Pirates who actually roamed the seas. Great Britain at that time was extremely interested in Pirates, and DeFoe was anxious to write about them. Much of what we know today was because of DeFoe's efforts.
